Why Margot Robbie’s Barbie Needs To Be On Your Watchlist
Schumer. Heard that right! However, one may think Robbie, the 33-year-old Australian actress, was born to play the infamous Harley Quinn Naomi. But with Barbie 2023, it's clear that Margot Robbie makes us believe what she wants us to believe.
Hollywood has not had a great track record with toy-based films, although some have been huge triumphs like The Bumblebee and The Lego Movie! But with a stellar star cast, great direction, and a subject we all love, Barbie is definitely here to break the records.
Welcome to the world of high humor, higher antics, and supremely much pink! With Quinn, aka Robbie, ready to rock the character again (this time being a little out of her character, though), we're sure we're all in for a treat with her latest release.
What’s The Fuss About, Barbie?
Warner Bros
Slated for release this July, audiences are already going gaga for Greta Gerwig's Barbie feature film, and for all the right reasons. From the initial teaser to the current buzz surrounding the viral photo filter that transports one to in a Barbie world, the film appears to be nothing short of extravagant and pink, of course. If you're one amongst the five who's confused with this whole Barbie-mania, we're certain you'd want to immerse yourself in Robbie's fantasyland by the end of this read. Wanna bet?
The fuss about Margot Robbie's Barbie has to do a lot with the fact that it firstly has an impeccable star cast. Here's looking at you, Ryan Gosling and Emma Mackey. Second, it's directed by the multi-talented director Greta Gerwig. And third? Well, let’s break it all down for you. C'mon, Barbies, let's go party!
The Unanticipated First Look
Warner Bros
The first look of the movie was enough to create a stir amongst fans as it opened with a faux serious voiceover about the invention of the Barbie doll with Robbie dressed in a black and white striped bodysuit and huge retro shades. People started gushing, but it was on April 4 that Warner Bros. released the second teaser trailer with an aerial view of Barbie Land, battling on a candy-floss-colore beach with Kate McKinnon doing the splits. Fans also noticed that beautiful Robbie looked nothing like her wicked Harley Quinn character.
The Magnificent Trailer
Warner Bros
The last official Barbie 2023 movie trailer, which debuted on May 25, was more than enough to blow people's minds and get them to buy tickets. Fortunately enough, the trailer was much more than Margot's black-and-white suit, having tons of pinks and literally any color you name! After a confusing teaser, the larger-than-life last trailer also gave us a clearer idea about the plot and what more to expect from the mega-blockbuster Barbie movie!
In the 2023 Barbie trailer, you can spot the star behind the wheel of a lusciously pink convertible, flashing her megawatt Harley Quinn smile and a cute polka dot headband. The Barbie trailer also suggested that Will Ferrell is the CEO of Mattel, who doesn't want Barbie in the real world, and Barbie challenging ideas about who supports her and who doesn't, a meta-analysis of Barbie's popularity and impact. Barbie will also follow Barbie's journey into the real world once she begins to have very "adult" thoughts like "Do you guys ever think about dying?" Now that's something, isn't it?
‘Barbie The Album’ - Great Artist Line-Ups
Warner Bros
Of course, fans have been on the edge of their seats ever since Barbie's 2023 trailer was soundtracked to Grammy-winning Dua Lipa's "Dance the Night," a new original song for the movie. Barbie's music also features some of the best artist line-ups, from Dominic, Khalid, and Nicki Minaj, to Ryan Gosling singing his very own "I'm Just Ken!" Recently 'Barbie The Album' was officially announced, and to describe it as anything short of dreamy would be an understatement!
You'd also jump off your seats knowing that even Billie Eilish has made a song for the soundtrack called"What Was I Made For?", which she penned alongside her brother Finneas! There's also a track called "Man I Am" by Sam Smith. Tune into 'Barbie The Album' for the originals from Lizzo and Ice Spice, plus a slew of other artists that they've promised to bring on board.
The Magical Direction Of Greta Gerwig

If the Barbie movie's soundtrack inspired you to add the film to your list of blockbusters of 2023 because of its catchy songs and lavish trailer, you'd be thrilled to learn that Greta Gerwig is directing it. The American actress, screenwriter, director, and the Golden Globe-nominated Gerwig has a lot to offer with her new movie, and we just can’t wait!
Barbie, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling (and co-written by Baumbach), is Greta's biggest and most mainstream project. But she insists it doesn't feel like that. She claims, "I've never been a part of anything like this. But in a funny way, it feels like the fundamentals are the same. Even though it is Barbie and it is an internationally known brand, the movie feels very personal. It feels just as intimate as Lady Bird or Little Women." Before Barbie, Gerwig had one of the most interesting careers in 21st-century Hollywood, so all we know is that this is going to be a cinematic masterpiece with Greta (always) at the top of her game!
Jacqueline Durran: The Oscar-Winning Costume Designer
Warner Bros
Did you know there have been over 30 Barbie computer-animated films created in the past two decades? This one seems to stand tall above all, and for all the obvious reasons. But what adds a feather to Barbie movie’s hat is the fact that everyone's favorite Margot Robbie is wearing Jacqueline Durran. The mastermind behind Barbie's costumes, Durran is an Oscar-winning costume designer who teamed up with Gerwig earlier for Little Women and now to bring Barbie and her pink world to life.
Barbie really is interlinked with fashion because how you play with her is by dressing her," says costume designer Jacqueline Durran. She explains. "It's about being completely dressed for your job or task." Every doll is sold with a fashion pack, so to go to the beach, Barbie needs a coordinating dress, playsuit, bag, hat, suitable shoes, and accessories. These clothing sets change and morph depending on what is happening in Barbie Land.
Pictures of Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, as Ken have been applaudingly luscious, especially whenBarbie and Ken were spotted rocking hot pink neon spandex costumes while rollerblading along the Venice beach. And when Warner Bros. gave us a first glimpse at Gosling's outfit, donning a cut-off denim top, bleach blonde hair, a spray tan, and those boasting six-pack abs, we knew we had even more reason to watch the movie on July 21st, 2023. If Barbie's costumes are anything, they're simply A-MAZING!
Barbie As The Ultimate Fashion Icon
For over a century now, the famous Barbie doll has gained popularity, making the dressing up game synonymous with the name Barbie. But the craze for dressing up the iconic Barbie just never died, in fact, it was in 1956 that Givenchy put her in a ball gown. Even Christian Louboutin created a complete collection of shoes just for her and in 2015, Moschino partnered with Barbie to create a doll collection and a women’s capsule collection. So it's safe to say that since its launch in 1959 by Ruth Handler, Barbie has been leaving a lasting mark on the world of fashion; meaning, from dressing Barbie, brands have started dressing us as her.
The trailer made us feel all kinds of nostalgic. But what really set the internet ablaze was the opening sequence where Barbie took off her shoes but kept her feet in the iconic pose of a Barbie doll.
Unbeatable Cast of Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Dua Lipa, and More!
Warner Bros
Sex Education standout and Margot Robbie clone Emma Mackey is a Barbie with a Nobel Prize in physics, giving Robbie and Mackey a chance to prove they're not actually the same person in different fonts. Robbie is also joined by an all-star cast, with the La La Land star Ryan Gosling playing Barbie's love interest Ken, alongside many other famous faces featuring in the film – including Dua Lipa as Mermaid Barbie, Issa Rae as President Barbie, Ncuti Gatwa, America Ferrera, and Will Ferrell, to name but a few.
The audience is already drooling over this star cast, but many are excited to witness Ryan Gosling play Ken. A Twitter user wrote, "Barbie is Ryan Gosling's best role to date—Greta Gerwig takes everything that has made him great in his previous films and combines them into a Super-Gosling. The Oscar buzz is real, and if it happens it would be one of the most fun and inspired nominations in recent memory.
What’s In For You?
While no storyline elements from Barbie have been revealed, various Barbie and Ken characters play a role in the story. You can also enjoy the film knowing that Robbie is not only starring as the iconic Barbie doll in this live-action film but also producing the film alongside LuckyChap's Tom Ackerley, Mattel's Robbie Brenner and David Heyman for Heyday Films.
If you're in love with Margot or just want to hear your favorite singer, Elish or Lipa, sing for Barbie, you know exactly where to be on July 21st! Because it's Barbie, and "She's Everything, He's Just Ken."
Don't forget to dress like your favorite Barbie from our collection when you're out and about this July to watch the biggest movie of the year!
